われわれ人間は、社会的な学習者である。生涯にわたり、他者から学び、変化する社会の現実を理解し、自らを取り巻く環境、共同体、技術に適応しながら生きている。今日のグローバル社会において、われわれは、グローバル化、気候変動、社会的不平等、急速な技術革新、とりわけAIの発展など、個人・集団・社会の適応およびウェルビーイングに深く関わる複合的な課題に直面している。

本部門は、気候変動や環境問題、社会的分断や不平等、AIを含む新たな技術環境に対する認識や態度の変化を検討し、これらの課題が人々の不安、価値観、社会的行動、心理的適応、ウェルビーイングに与える影響を明らかにすることを目指す。また、それらの知見に基づき、個人および集団が不確実性の高い社会においてよりよく適応し、持続可能なウェルビーイングを実現するための心理的・社会的方略を探求する。

さらに、東アジアの伝統的価値観や文化的要因、多文化社会における相互理解のあり方を視野に入れながら、環境、社会、技術をめぐる課題が個人・集団の適応プロセスや社会的学習のあり方に与える影響についても検討する。特に、AI時代における情報の受容、倫理的判断、他者との協働、社会的責任に関する学びは、世界市民教育における重要な課題である。

このような研究活動を通して、本部門は、継続的な社会的学習者としての学習者や市民が、環境・社会・技術に関わる課題について批判的かつ多角的な視点を養うための基礎的知見を蓄積する。また、他分野の専門家とも協働しながら、包摂的で持続可能な社会の実現に向けた理解と対話に貢献することを目指す。

Human beings are, by nature, social learners. Across the life course, we learn from others, make sense of changing social realities, and adapt to the environments, communities, and technologies that shape our lives. In today’s global society, we face complex challenges deeply related to the adaptation and well-being of individuals, groups, and societies, including globalization, climate change, social inequality, and rapid technological innovation, particularly the development of AI.

This division examines changes in perceptions of and attitudes toward global challenges such as climate change and environmental issues, social division and inequality, and emerging technological environments including AI. It aims to clarify how these challenges affect people’s anxiety, values, social behavior, psychological adaptation, and well-being. Based on these insights, the division also explores psychological and social strategies that can help individuals and groups adapt more effectively in highly uncertain societies and realize sustainable well-being.

Furthermore, by incorporating perspectives on traditional East Asian values, cultural factors, and mutual understanding in multicultural societies, the division investigates how environmental, social, and technological challenges influence the adaptation processes of individuals and groups, as well as forms of social learning. In particular, learning related to information reception, ethical judgment, collaboration with others, and social responsibility in the age of AI represents an important issue for world citizenship education.

Through these research activities, the division seeks to accumulate foundational knowledge that can help learners and citizens, as ongoing social learners, develop critical and multifaceted perspectives on environmental, social, and technological challenges. In collaboration with experts from other fields, it also aims to contribute to understanding and dialogue toward the realization of an inclusive and sustainable society.
