Visit to the Utoro Peace Memorial Museum (July 15, 2025)

Activity Report

On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, members of the World Citizen Education Project, along with faculty and students from the Graduate School of Education, visited the Utoro Peace Memorial Museum, which was organized primarily by the Human Development and Education Team.

We were given a lecture and guided tour of the exhibits by the staff of the Utoro Peace Memorial Museum, through which each participant connected the history of Utoro’s “small unification” to their own areas of interest and concern. From the rooftop of the museum, we were able to view the entire district while hearing about its changes over time, followed by a Q&A session that allowed for further reflection. The visit offered a tangible sense of how the history we learned through experience continues to shape the present and future.

At the museum, the history of the Utoro community was clearly conveyed, but the exhibits were not framed merely as a “sad history.” Instead, they focused on “the power and practices of the people who overcame it.” From the perspective of world citizenship, there is much to learn from the actions of the citizens who achieved a “small unification” within Utoro by standing firm against the forces of division, such as those between nations or between corporations and workers.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to everyone at the Utoro Peace Memorial Museum for providing us with such a valuable experience.
